The volt is named after Alessandro Volta, who in 1800 stacked discs of zinc and copper with brine-soaked cloth between them and made the first battery. He called it a pila, a pile, which is still the Italian word for battery.

ἀρχή, arkhē: the beginning, the first principle.

Arkyvolt joins his unit to the Greek arkhē: the source, the beginning, the first principle. The source of power. The name was chosen before the companies were, which is the right order for a name.

A volt measures pressure, not quantity: how hard the charge is pushed, not how much of it there is. It is a good unit for a holding company to be named after. See kilowatt and anchor.
